Hey Volters đ
Today we will talk about Finding Your Career Path
The pressure is real. Society expects us to have our life mapped out the moment you graduate (or even before). But what if:
Your course of study wasnât your choice?
You donât vibe with your degree?
You donât even like the idea of 9-5?
You have absolutely no clue what career you want
Let me gist you my own story đ (As per storyteller that I am đ)
So, once upon a time (a.k.a. post-secondary school days), I applied to study Accounting in the university. I had plans and I was ready. But when the admission list came out?
Plot twist! đŹ
Tell me why my name was found in the faculty of Education.
I wonât lie, I was confused but decided to go with the flow even though I knew deep down, teaching wasnât âmy thing.â
I continued with the course. One random lecture morning, one unexpected comment from a lecturer about a career path I had never heard of⊠and that was my lightbulb moment. I did my research, and guess what?
It was love at first Google. đ
I love what I read about the career on google and it matches my personality and that was it.
I found it đ đ đ
That was how my career journey started. Not from a plan. Not from a passion. Just curiosity and a bit of divine disruption.
Dear Volters, how do you find your career path?
1. Try Stuff.
Donât sit around waiting to âfigure it all out.â Try internships, volunteering, freelancing, side hustles etc. Anything that gives you a taste of real-world roles. Itâs okay if it doesnât click at first. Youâre collecting data on yourself.
2. Stay Curious.
Google is your bestie. Ask questions. Watch videos. Talk to people. Curiosity is a career compass and it points you towards what excites you.
3. Make Mistakes
You wonât get it perfect the first time and thatâs okay. Mistakes arenât failures; theyâre experiments that give you feedback. I am sure you must have heard of Failing forward.
4. Take Personality or Career Tests.
There are various free and paid personality test you can take but many are helpful. Try ones like 16Personalities, High5, or even just ask your friends: âWhat kind of career do you see me in?â Youâd be surprised how people perceive your strengths.
5. Reflect Like Itâs a Daily Journal.
Self-reflection is your cheat code. Ask yourself:
What tasks energize me?
What drains me?
What problems do I find easy to solve?
What would I do even if no one paid me?
And remember, you won’t discover everything at once. Growth is a whole journey, not a one-time download.
A Few Nuggets đ§ :
- Thereâs no age limit to getting it together. Life doesnât have a deadline. I am sure you must have seen people above 50 on TikTok who are just starting out a new career path. And they are so excited about the new path and looking forward to more,
- Your career interests can (and probably will) change as you grow. Thatâs not confusion.
- Youâre not behind. Youâre not late. Youâre just becoming.
If youâre currently confused, unsure, or doubting yourself. Welcome to the club. It is absolutely okay. Just donât stay stuck. Move, try, ask, reflect and trust that youâll find your way.
